Book of Life” is a deeply personal poetic work, shown as two open scrolls and a single rolled scroll that together trace the arc of a human life. One scroll reflects the helplessness and dependency of birth, the other the frailty, helplessness, and dependency of old age, while the rolled scroll between them stands for the unrecorded, unpredictable journey that lies in between. Inspired by the artist’s experience of watching a vibrant mother rapidly decline and pass away, the piece holds both sorrow and a quiet sense of release, acknowledging how love can make farewell both unbearable and, in its mercy, a kind of blessing. It invites viewers to reflect on how we begin and end in similar vulnerability, and how the marks of ordinary days become the story written on our own scrolls.
